NIU’s Time Arts Department in coordination with the College of Visual and Performing Arts cordially invites you to join Ryder Cooley as she performs excerpts from Xmalia.

XMALIA features songs about extinct animals such as the Tasmanian Tiger, the Pyrenean Ibex the Xerces Butterfly, plus a Dodo-trapeze act. This entertaining tragedy is hosted by a lonely mortician, who summons the animals back to life for her Graveyard Cabaret.

C. Ryder Cooley is an inter-disciplinary musician and artist. Weaving together songs on ukulele, singing saw and accordion with projections and movement, her work reveals a terrain of lost dreams and phantom memories. Ryder has performed in numerous bands including Fall Harbor, The Ramblin Jug Stompers, The Darklings, Corner Tour and Down River.

Seven Midwestern Artists Exhibit New Work Dealing With the Elusive Concept of the ‘Invisible’

On the evening of March 31st at the Pleasant Street Gallery in DeKalb, IL seven newmedia artists will display a group of work dealing with the concept of the invisible. The exhibition will be a one-night event held at Pleasant Street Gallery (1650 Pleasant St. DeKalb, IL) starting promptly at 5pm through 9pm. Invisible, how do you communicate this particularly intangible concept? As we survive our daily lives we sometimes stand naive of the ephemeral nature that surrounds us. The subtle suggestions, soft symbols, and suggestive gestures that often guide our lives. Seven artists look to examine their idea of the ‘invisible’ in the upcoming exhibition properly titled “UN-”. The featured seven artists work in a variety of new/mixed media. The exhibited work will feature digital based performance, installation, sculpture, sound, and video.

Exhibiting artists: Aaron Vermedal, Carrie Schumacher, Jason Judd, Brian Montana, Iga Puchalska, R.J. Vanderwerf, Natee Prasanpanich

What Happens Next?

In cinema, as in life, we desire resolution. However, we must remember that the journey is as valuable (if not more) as the destination. All too often this cinematic structure becomes a well-worn path to the resolution. “What happens next?” is an engaging collection of short video art collected from a diverse group of artists living and working in the New York Hudson Valley area. Each artist approaches their craft with a variety of intentions. Some seek to entertain, to some, creating the moving image is an experiment, and to others the image represents a personal or political statement. Regardless of their intentions, each of these works relies on the audience to intellectually interact with it and thereby complete its thought. What Happens Next? was curated by Bart Woodstrup for the Beacon Sitelines and Hudson Plugged In art festivals in 2008.

Artists Include: Dara Greenwald + Bettina Escauriza, Jaanika Peerna, Christine Sciulli, LoVid, Shawn Lawson, Penny Lane, Matthew Biederman with Alain Thibault, C. Ryder Cooley with Jen Smith and Gretchen Hildebran, J. Craig Tompkins, and Project-K.

Exciting new additions: Randi Stella, Iga Puchalska, Matthew Dotson, and Paolo Pedercini.

Please note: Some imagery not appropriate for young viewers, or people with neurological conditions.
